If you haven’t been living under a rock or were without internet for the past 10 years, you’ve likely heard of Niseko’s unique backcountry gate system. Many of the incredible Japow shots you’ve seen in magazines or on Instagram were probably taken in one of these areas.

Niseko’s backcountry gates are a collection of lift-accessed backcountry zones, accessible through Hanazono, Hirafu, Niseko Village, Annupuri, and Moiwa ski resorts. Whether you’re seeking deep, blower powder, technical tree runs, or picturesque Yotei views, you’re set to have some of the best runs of your life.

As with any backcountry terrain, safety and preparation are essential. You need to have proper safety gear, including a beacon, shovel, and probe, and know how to use them. Stay up to date with Niseko’s Daily Avalanche Report so you can know where it’s safe to ride.

Here Are Some of Our Favourite Zones:

Gate 3 – Hirafu Peak

Gate 3 is accessed from the top of the King #4 Chair, also known as the ‘Pizza Box’. This gate leads to the peak of Mt. Annupuri, which is a 20-30 minute hike from the top of the lift. On a clear day, you’ll enjoy breathtaking views of Mt Yotei from the summit. There are various directions you can take down, but some lines may require a hike out or transportation to return. It’s essential to have a plan before heading up there. If you’re new up there or returning to the resorts, we suggest dropping into the East Ridge.

Gate 11: Mizuno No Sawa (Niseko Village)

It’s the only gate in Niseko Village and located midway down the mountain. To get there, load the Niseko Village Gondola and ski towards the Wonderland Chair to find the entrance. A short walk uphill followed by a long, flat trail leads to a powder-filled gully known for its excellent riding conditions during storms, thanks to its low altitude and tree cover.

Strawberry Fields – Hanazono

While it’s not listed on the Niseko’s backcountry gates map, that doesn’t mean the powder turns are any less incredible. Access Strawberry Fields by exiting left at the top of the Hanazono #1 Chairlift. You’ll find plenty of deep snow, drops, and pillows to keep you wanting more. Wherever you exit the area, you’ll be funnelled out not far from the base of the chairlift so you can keep on lapping.
